Back in February, I mentioned my old quasi-boss Tom’s new project, 5 For 50. According to him:
In trying to figure out what I can do to provide justice to the weak,
here’s what I’ve come up with. My heart is to mobilize others to help
the widow, the orphan and the poor. In an attempt to do that, I’m
starting a foundation tied in with my book, Red Letters called Five for
50. It’s about 5 simple steps any of us can do to stand in solidarity
with the 50 million people in the world infected with HIV. Here’s how
it works:
- Give 5 minutes a day to pray for those suffering from HIV/AIDS.
- Give 5 hours a week to fast for those suffering from HIV/AIDS.
- Give 5 dollars a month to the Five for 50 Fund and support worthy causes.
- Give 5 days a year to travel overseas and help alleviate poverty and suffering.
- Give 5 people an opportunity to join you on your journey.
The site is up and running and has a link for you to donate enough to feed, educate, and clothe one, 5, 10, or more childern. The cost? $5 a month (per child). That’s it. Let me put it in terms we’ll all understand. That’s merely one grande iced mocha and a muffin. A month.
Click here to head to the site, and go here to request a sample chapter of Tom’s new book, Red Letters.

“Concerns about the bottled-water industry, and increasing corporate control of water, are growing across the country,” said Gigi Kellett, director of the “Think Outside the Bottle” campaign, which aims to encourage people to drink tap water.
San Francisco’s mayor banned city employees from using city funds to buy bottled water when tap water is available. Ann Arbor, Michigan passed a resolution banning commercially bottled water at city events and Salt Lake City, Utah asked department heads to eliminate bottled water.
Critics charge the bottled water industry adds plastic to landfills, uses too much energy by producing and shipping bottles across the world and undermines confidence in the safety and cleanliness of public water supplies, all while much of the world’s population is without access to clean water.

So, on the heels of my little whine fest that I had last night, I have some much better news (didn’t I say that today was a new day?)
Let me introduce you to Priscilla:

It’s a 2005 Saturn Ion 2, with 18, 950 miles, four doors and power everything. The color isn’t my first choice; they called it “dragonfly blue”. I call it, “1993 Teal”. But, it’s a standard, it has a sunroof, and all the speakers work. (what can i say? i’m not a complex fellow). I’ll tell you the story of its purchase later, but for now – I am a happy, happy camper.

I haven’t been on here for anything meaningful in quite a while. Frankly, I’m embarrassed; I should have my blogger card revoked.
I haven’t been writing because, quite honestly, I haven’t felt like I have had anything to say. After getting back from Michigan, Brenda and I have sunk back into our work-related routines. We both are very happy with our jobs, so there’s no reason to complain report there.
More than that, though, is the feeling that I’m really in a complete and total rut. I’m working in the same two industries (restaurants and coffee shops) that I was in 2001, so I’ve been fighting the feeling that I’ve taken several steps backwards. After spending so much of my adult life in active church work, being a mere attender/volunteer –while at first a very welcome and necessary change– has become . . . unfulfilling. (This is in NO WAY a reflection of Pathways. The same situation would be emerging no matter where we found our church home.) Now, I’m not exactly beating down the door of the pastors, begging to lead anything. It’s more of a reflection that I used to live and work with a purpose that seemed far loftier than the one I feel like I have now.
There’s not really an answer that I’m seeking; I just wanted to share. That’s what the blog is for . . . right?
Plus, who knows what tomorrow will bring . . .

Being the giant nerd that I am, I was of course in line to purchase the final installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, at 11:45PM last night. My friend had a wristband for me, so I was out the door and home from Borders by 12:21am. I sat down with a bowl of ice cream and read the whole thing from start to finish. It was great.
and yes. I am very sleepy.
