Christ The Lord: Road To Cana

July 28, 2008

I was turned on to Anne Rice’s Christ The Lord series in part by my good friend John, who wrote about her debut work in the series a couple years ago.  Her follow-up is equally good, if not better, because (as John says) she is now starting to weave the Biblical narrative into her intensive research into the first-century Middle East.

I finished it today (while sitting by the pool - ha!) and loved a dialog that took place near the end of the book, right after Jesus has performed his miracle of turning water into wine.  It’s a thoughtful insight into the debate of loving versus fighting with your enemies, and some may not like where Jesus falls on that spectrum.

“James, don’t you understand what I want?  Look into the faces of those around you who saw the wine come from the jar.  I want an innovation that will ignite the world.  That wine is no less than the blood inside my veins.  I come to bring the Face of the Lord — to the whole wide world.”

They fell silent.

“The Face of the Lord,” I repeated it.  I looked intently at James, and at Cleopas.  I looked one by one at each of them.  “The Face of the Lord I mean to bring to all.”

Silence.  They stood still loosely gatherd and staring at me, rapt yet not daring to speak.

“Don’t you know all battles fought with swords are ultimately lost battles?” I asked.  “Don’t you see yourselves that Scripture and history are filled with battles?  What comes of battles?  Don’t speak to me of Alexander or Pompehy or Augustus, of Germanicus or any Casaer.  Don’t speak to me of ensigns whether they are raised on high in Jerusalem of lost in the Teutoburg Forest of the far north.  Don’t speak to me of King David or of his son Solomon.  Look at me as I stand here!  I want a victory that far surpasses anything that’s been written, either in ink or in blood.”

(For good measure, here’s a great editorial by Anne Rice that ran on the Washington Post site.  Thanks to Zach, via John.)

Happenings (Live from Michigan City)

July 27, 2008

yeah - it’s been a crazy couple weeks since the last snarky thing I posted about our president.  Sorry about that.

But, i’m sitting by the pool of the vacation house my uncle Mark found for us in beautiful Michigan City, Indiana.  I just spent the last few hours in a never-ending game of bocce with my cousin Jake and my aunt and uncle on the beach of Lake Michigan.  It’s been amazing to get away for a couple days since we’ve been going like mad the last couple months.  Brenda is finally back to having the same days off as me (Sunday and Monday), so we’ve used that as an opportunity to catch up on some Vancouver time .  here’s a quick list of pertinent info:

1.  I’m playing bass in a ’80’s cover band that was created to play at a birthday party of a friend of our guitarist at church.  Everytime we rehearse “Sweet Child ‘O Mine” i think of my friend Terry from Raleigh and everytime I play “Black In Black” I think of Wahba.  Not sure why.  We

2.  My friends Jasen and Amanda were in town for about 20 hours.  It was great to see them, but it was altogether too brief.

3.  Work is going great for both of us.  I finally got business cards.  Whee.

um - that’s all i can think of.  Back to the sun.

Dubya, Pollution Is Not Funny

July 13, 2008

This may just sum up his presidency; he thinks it’s all one big joke on the world.

The American leader, who has been condemned throughout his presidency for failing to tackle climate change, ended a private meeting with the words: “Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter.”

He then punched the air while grinning widely, as the rest of those present including Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy looked on in shock.

Read the rest here.

This was an unfortunate gaffe, since normally the President is actually quite a hoot.

OMG NEW SIXPENCE !!!1!!111!!!!!

July 11, 2008

Matt Slocum and Leigh Nash of Sixpence None the Richer

So, i’ve been following this little Texas band since the spring of 1995, seeing them live in Dallas so many times that when they happened to be playing a concert at my high school (!) in Vancouver (!) at  the same time I was home visiting, Leigh recognized me from stage and asked where she’d seen me before (one of my all-time favorite stalker fan moments.   Their break-up has been lamented over and again, and when I heard Matt and Leigh were back in the studio . . . *swoon*

Courtesy of my new BFF Shane Bertou, I discovered a wonderful website, Noise Trade.  Its hook is that you can either pay what you want to download an album (the Radiohead model), or you can give them the e-mail address of three of your friends and then download the album FOR FREE (the spam-your-friends model).  I chose the latter, of course, which would explain the Noise Trade invitations that some of you received in your inbox (sorry).

Anyway, the album!  Leigh sounds great, especially on “Sooner Than Later” and “Amazing Grace (Give It Back”).  Matt’s lyrics are as poignant as ever, as both have been through much in the years since the dissolution of the original band.

Highly recommended!

The Great Seal of Obamaland?

My, Mr. Obama, what a big, presidential seal you have.
