New Track From Cold War Kids
December 10, 2007here they are with a track from the Black Cab Sessions:
Back To The Music
November 10, 2007For a “music blog”, i certainly haven’t been talking about music for a while. Here’s a quick rundown of a few things I’ve been listening to lately:
Band of Horses - Cease To Begin
I had very high hopes for this one. Everything All The Time made my Best of 2006 list, so I was anxious to see how the move to South Carolina was going to pan out for the former NW’ers. It’s a good, solid release. It’s not my favorite, and I don’t think it’s going to make this year’s list, but it’s probably still a 4 out of 5. Ben’s vocals are still the strongest, most unique aspect of the band. The arrangements are stronger this time out, but the overall feel is a bit more mainstream.
A.C. Newman - The Slow Wonder
TSW is the debut of I Radio Heaven fave The New Pornographer’s frontman A.C. (Carl) Newman. It’s a 2004 release, and I’ve been looking for it for a while (thanks, eMusic). So far, I love it. It’s basically TNP-lite, though it’s a better solo release than Broken Social Scene Presents . . . Kevin Drew Spirit If. Just like The New Pornographers, it’s indie-pop wonder at it’s best; for fans of Spoon, etc.
Tunng - Good Arrows
I picked this one up on my foray to Ballard last Monday, so i’ve only had time for a couple of listens. The word “folktronica” has been tossed around in describing this band, but the first thing I thought of was 2006’s masterpiece The Dust of Retreat from Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s. It’s dreamy and ethereal, with grand but never pretentious instrumentation. Very good, and very worth checking out.
Bruce Springsteen and Arcade Fire
October 16, 2007Arcade Fire Setlist
September 25, 2007I’ll post a full review soon, but let’s just say that tonight’s Arcade Fire show has rocketed into my Top 5 shows of all time, and well . . . no one on the list is safe from losing their spot. Those that call them the best live show on the planet are probably right.
Here’s the setlist:

Neighborhood #2 (Laika)
No Cars Go
Haiti
I’m Sleeping In A Submarine
Neon Bible
Black Wave
Intervention

OK X: A Tribute to OK Computer
July 10, 2007
The blogworld will soon be abuzz with this news, and we at I Radio Heaven want to do our part . . .
Stereogum has just released an exclusive, track by track tribute to Radiohead’s brilliant OK Computer to celebrate the tenth anniversary of it’s release. Among the artists contributing are David Bazan, My Brightest Diamond, Vampire Weekend, The Twilight Sad, and I Radio Heaven heroes Cold War Kids.
Get it here.
Patti Smith Covers Smells Like Teen Spirit
June 11, 2007Chris Cornell - Billie Jean
June 7, 2007I’m not a huge Chris Cornell fan. I love Soundgarden, and I liked a few Audioslave songs, but his solo stuff hasn’t really done it for me. It’s odd, because "Cochise" is one of my favorite vocal performances.
However, this cover of Billie Jean is quite frankly bad-ass.
Enjoy . . .
Free Arctic Monkeys !!!
May 3, 2007So . . . courtesy of I Radio Heaven, Domino Records, and Cornerstone Promotions, I have a killer 12" from Arctic Monkeys, "Brianstorm," to distribute as I see fit. Here’s the tracklisting:
1. If You Found This It’s Probably Too Late
2. Brianstorm
3. Temptation Greets You Like Your Naughty Friend
4. What If You Were Right The First Time?
Now, I can’t just give this away, so we’re having the premiere of I Radio Heaven "Gives Away Free Crap." And here’s how it’s going to go: Since I Radio Heaven "Gives Away Free Crap" is, well, a crappy name, I want you to come up with a better one. Bonus points will be given for submitting an icon along with your submission. Entries will be judged solely by me ;-).
I think I’ll run this one for about a week, and I’ll announce the winner next Friday.
Happy thinking . . .
Arctic Monkeys
May 2, 2007Hold on - let me dust off this little music site.
*brush, brush*
ok - our mail guy person brought me another present on Friday. It was the new Arctic Monkeys sophmore release Favourite Worst Nightmare. I was a little trepidatious about this disc for several reasons. When Arctic Monkeys first started to break here in the US, it was after the British press had already shot their collective wads over the foursome, crowning them the "saviors of rock and roll" and after NME solidified their position as the most ridiculous magazine since The Weekly World News by placing Whatever People Say, That’s What I’m Not 5th on their list of the 100 Greatest British Albums of All Time, FOUR SLOTS HIGHER THAN THE FIRST APPEARANCE BY THE BEATLES, who debuted at 9th with Revolver.
Knowing that WPSIA,TWIN couldn’t possibly meet those obscene expectations, it was still a good album–good enough, in fact, to make my Top Ten of 2006. However, late 2006 and 2007 has already brought less impressive sophmore efforts by indie darlings from The Killers to Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, so I really didn’t know what Favourite Worst Nightmare was going to bring.
Quick answer? I like it. The chaos is a bit more controlled, and there’s even a ballad or two. Further listens will see if it will crack my Best of the Year list (by my count, there are at least 5 or 6 ahead of it so far), but "Florescent Adolescent" is a great tune, "Brianstorm" kicks off the album with their trademark frenzy, and "505" winds it down, reins everything in, and best of all, makes you hit "repeat all" on your player of choice.
**** out of 5.
