Hi There

February 12, 2008

Remember me?

Anyway, as you can guess, i’ve been quite busy lately.   and blog-lazy.  I’ve spent the last few weeks working on a new bar menu for work.  It was quite the ordeal, dealing with recipes, supplies, garnishes, and . . . fonts.  I was working with our AGM on it.  That was a great thing; I totally needed someone to keep my ideas in line.  So what are you waiting for?  come pay me a visit! (order the Brenda J.)

Now I’m working on a new project; a bar meeting.  Fun!

In other news, i’ve been listening to a lot of The Go! Team.  Their second album, Proof of Youth,  just missed my top ten of 2007.  It’s this crazy mix of Le Tigre, The Action Figures (*wink*), old-school homegirl rap, funk, and cheerleading.  That’s right - cheerleading.

Intrigued?

TV On The Radio (with Grizzly Bear)

October 18, 2006

Brooklyn band TV On The Radio has been riding an ever-increasing wave of support for quite some time now.  They have moved from blogger darlings to favorite-sons-of-David Bowie to indie hipster superstars over the past three or four years.  Along the way, they have developed a reputation of having one of the strongest live shows in the business.  I, like any self-respecting indie snob, was dying to catch one of their famed concerts, and I was awarded handsomely for my patience as they came with none other than the anti-folk/lo-fi kings Grizzly Bear

The show took place at Seattle’s The Showbox, an amazing venue with a rich, vintage maroon and gold decor and a great layout.  The stage sits in the middle of a floor that is spread wide rather than deep, making even the back row relatively close to the band.  Two(!) bars sit on the back two corners, and they have cocktail tables and bleachers, giving every seat a great view.  We managed to slide our way to the right end of the stage, and we were only about ten feet back from the action.

The Island of Marna

October 12, 2006

I recently had the opportunity to read Jamey Heit’s new novel, The Island of Marna.
I was excited, since I do not make time to read from the
fantasy/science fiction genre very often.  Actually, the only authors
of this ilk that I consume regularly are C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien
(which puts Heit at an admitted disadvantage from the outset).   Heit,
who is a student at Princeton Theological Seminary, has a well-received
book of poetry to his credit, Voices From The Last Supper.  This is his first foray into fiction.

The Island of Marna
owes an obvious debt to Tolkien’s seminal work,
much as every writer of fantasy since.  It begins with its heroine,
Salas, a Sebasan (people of the mountains), on a scouting mission atop
one of her beloved eagles.  She sees “the enemy” making inroads on the
island, so she decides to seek the help of the Emmeans (forest
dwellers) – a community of people that were once a part of the
Sebasans, but are now estranged.  Despite the mutual distrust between
the two groups, they decide to work together to overcome their
adversary.  Salas and Oscar, the Emmean hero, go on a quest to locate
some mysterious berries that offer great power, while their people band
together to stand against the evil Molech and his band of soldiers and Orcs Doppelgangers.  Sound familiar?

Gutsy Faith

October 10, 2006

Gutsy Faith is the new book by Jeff Edmondson.  He is a former youth pastor and he currently serves as the manager of the youth publishing wing of Nazarene Publishing House, Barefoot Ministries.  The book begins with Jeff (who is, by the way, an actual rocket scientist) recounting the story that inspired the book.  He was having a discussion with his older brother about Jeff’s plan to leave his Air Force commission and take a position at a small church in a small town in Virginia.  His brother asked how he could be sure that he (Jeff) was doing the right things.  "Gutsy faith" was the response.

It’s an old communications trick to make your point to your audience clearer and more memorable; "guts" was his chosen crutch.  Jeff (and The American Heritage Dictionary) defines "guts" as one’s innermost being, the inner working parts, courage and fortitude, nerve and audacity, or deeply felt.  He added the word “faith” and proceeded to construct a book that was unfortunately only slightly more than the standard Family Christian Store “How To Have More Faith” fare.

There were a few things about the work that I did enjoy.  Mr. Edmondson began each chapter with a passage of Scripture.  This did increase the poignancy of what he was saying.  He also added questions at the end of each chapter that were meant to personalize and deepen the lessons contained therein.  They were both great tools that could be used in a small group or Bible study.
