Soooo . . . Yeah

December 22, 2007

For like the first time in what seems like months, I have an entire morning to sit here and blog. I’ve got that ridiculously good Rogue Wave song “Lake Michigan” spinning on the ol’ turntable, I have a good cup of Caffe Vita beside me, and I’m ready to go.

*crickets*

I keed, I keed.

Let’s start with work. I think I mentioned something about it a while ago, but I’ve been quasi-promoted. It’s not really a promotion as it’s more work with a slight raise. Maybe that’s the classic definition of a promotion, but if it doesn’t come with minions, what good is it? anyway, I am now in charge of the inventory at work. that means I have to keep track of our sales and ordering every week, but it also means I have a bit of say when it comes to what products we stock at the bar.

Plus, i got to pick the beer :D .

We (work) also had a couple bartenders leave. The first one was new, and he didn’t really fit into the vibe of the restaurant. The second one, however, had been there for longer than I had, and he was pretty talented when it came to designing new cocktails. However, he came with about 47 times the normal amount of issues, and I have to say that I’m not sure how missed he will be. Contrary to popular belief, this doesn’t mean I’m now in charge (mostly because despite what our old bartender thought, he wasn’t either), but I will have a bit more of a voice and responsibility there.

Brenda’s job is going really well, too. She had a bit of bad news given to her in that she’s no longer going to have Sundays and Mondays off every other month, and now will permanently be off Thursdays and Fridays. We’re not quite sure how we’re going to balance our time together since I have no choice but to be off Sundays and Mondays (we’re closed at work) and I’ll have to work a couple extra nights, but I’m sure we’ll figure it out.

We’re getting ready to head to Vancouver for Christmas. I had to leave the possibility of working on Sunday open so that I could have the 26th off to have Christmas at my parents (we’ll be at the Moore’s on the 25th), so we won’t be leaving Seattle until around 6 or 7pm Sunday night. We’ll be at my parents until sometime Christmas Eve evening and then head to the Moore’s and stay there until sometime Christmas night when we head back to Seattle. I have another busy week at work, but i will be off on New Year’s Eve for only the second time in the nine 12/31’s that we’ve been married, so we are both extremely excited about that!

Now, for a Christmas present, here’s a great video and I’ll even upload that Rogue Wave tune to my Facebook page to celebrate the holiday:

New Track and Tour From Over the Rhine

July 20, 2007

Overtherhine1re
Indie pop/folk/alt.country duo (and I Radio Heaven namesakes) Over the Rhine are back with a huge tour announcement and a song from their upcoming release The Trumpet Child

I heard this song back in November when I caught them up in Vancouver at Regent College, and it sounds even better with a full band behind it.

Patti Smith Covers Smells Like Teen Spirit

June 11, 2007

I’m late to this party, but Stereogum posted Patti Smith’s cover of Nirvana’s "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from her new disc Twelve.  It’s interesting, but I still prefer Tori Amos’s version.

Free Arctic Monkeys !!!

May 3, 2007

So . . . courtesy of I Radio Heaven, Domino Records, and Cornerstone Promotions, I have a killer 12" from Arctic Monkeys, "Brianstorm,"  to distribute as I see fit. Here’s the tracklisting:

Am_vinyl 1. If You Found This It’s Probably Too Late
2. Brianstorm
3. Temptation Greets You Like Your Naughty Friend
4. What If You Were Right The First Time?

Now, I can’t just give this away, so we’re having the premiere of I Radio Heaven "Gives Away Free Crap."  And here’s how it’s going to go:  Since I Radio Heaven "Gives Away Free Crap" is, well, a crappy name, I want you to come up with a better one.  Bonus points will be given for submitting an icon along with your submission.  Entries will be judged solely by me ;-).

I think I’ll run this one for about a week, and I’ll announce the winner next Friday.

Happy thinking . . .

New Sufjan Stevens Track!

March 30, 2007

(sorry.  this one has been sitting in my drafts folder for a week)

Sufjan is back with a cover of Joni Mitchell’s classic tune "Free Man In Paris" for the upcoming (and cleverly named) A Tribute to Joni Mitchell

Visit Hype to hear it (click on "listen" and then listen to #2, which is the best version)

Borne

March 30, 2007

The mailman was very generous to me today.  I got my physical copy of Cloud Cult’s newest, The Meaning of 8 (in all of it’s environmentally friendly glory), but I also got a surprise: a promo copy of the new Borne CD, Loss of Signal

Borne is a new band hailing from the shores of Australia, and iTunes gave them a boost by making "The Guide" the worldwide free single of the week back in February.  That pretty much broke things wide open for them as they landed in the iTunes top fifteen albums downloaded in the US, France, Australia, Canada, Japan, and the UK with no promotion other than the iTunes spot.

Musically, they’re meandering through territory occupied by Gomez, Joseph Arthur, British Sea Power, and Fields.  Chris Martin and Coldplay were obviously big influences on them, too, especially vocally.  However, another singer came to mind: Jimmy Gnecco, of the band Ours.  They’re not really similar sonically, but they both have a great texture and feeling to their vocals.
