I made a new discovery this weekend - Lounjin. It’s a new sake bar/coffee shop in the U-District, right on "the Ave," across the street from The Buffalo Exchange.
The sake was great - they’re offering 15-18 different types, as well
as a few choice cocktails with sake as their main ingredient.
Excellent small appetizers, and a good selection of beer and wine as
well.
The decor was good - a welcome change from many of the dingier
college places on the strip. There’s several tall tables and chairs,
as well as a couple of luxurious couches. The deep red walls and
photography on the walls added a sense of class, romance, and
sensuality to the cafe.
During the day, Lounjin is a great place to get some free wi-fi and coffee. They’re pulling shots of Seattle’s own Zoka coffee as well as offering good pastries (from Louisa’s Cafe Bakery) and tea selections from Blue Willow and Republic of Tea.
visit them at: 4527 University Way NE, Seattle WA 98105

A quick preview of some upcoming CD reviews:
The Broken West - I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On
The indie answer to That Thing You Do’s The Wonders. Not necessarily an early Top Ten contender, but solidly in my Top 20.
The Kings of Leon - Because The Times
I got my preview copy of Because The Times courtesy of Fader, and let me tell you how amazing it is. Words and phrases like "epic" and "on the list of greatest CD’s ever" are already being tossed around by me and by bloggers everywhere. Buy this one the second it is available.
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
It’s as good as you’d expect. They’re growing, in a good way.
Bloc Party - A Weekend in the City
This one leaked very early, but for a good reason. They matured in a way that The Killers tried to and failed miserably.

My favorite Swedish band Kent is back in the studio!
According to their MySpace page:
The band recently flew to Shokan (NY), Allaire Studios, to begin
recording on their 7th album with producer Jon "Joshua" Schumann. They
will continue working on this album throughout the spring and summer
and anticipate a release in the fall of 2007.
That’s the best music news I’ve had in a while!

I was making some turkey chili (which I do very well, for the record), and since the parentals were in town, I needed to grab some wine. Unfortuneately, I was at Costco when I remembered this, so my choices were a bit limited. I sort of lucked into this little find: Le Grand Noir. It’s a French, 60/40 Cabernet/Shiraz blend, and it is part of the new trend amoung French producers to only put the grapes used on the label rather than the usual appilation. (For the record, the wine is from the Languedoc region; it has the dubious honor of giving us the Fat Bastard label, Red Bicyclette, and Arrogant Frog as well.)
Anyway, the wine was a big hit. It held up to the chili very well, without overwhelming it or being overwhelmed itself. There were some nice wood overtones to it, with some nice spice from the Shiraz that kept the fruit of the Cabernet in check. For $8.49, it was a great find.
