Cheyenne, or How I Came To Loathe Wyoming And The People Therein

July 26, 2006

We made it out of Justin with Antonio and I in the van and Brenda and Anida driving the Vibe with Sally in tow.  We decided to take the route through New Mexico, rather than Kansas, to get us through Denver.  After stops for Dairy Queen and finding a very nice Starbucks in south Denver, we decided to keep going to Cheyenne.

Bad idea.

We got there around midnight local time, and we pulled into a couple hotels.  They were full (a golf tournement was in town).  So, the girls went ahead to check out a couple others, while Antonio and some desk clerk got into a "discussion" about whether Wyoming or Texas was the greatest place on earth, with the desk clerk delivering (quite Texas-like) lines such as, "We’ll let you stay here in Wyoming."  I stayed out of it.

Anyway, Brenda or Anida called, saying that they found a hotel near downtown, so we made a left out of the hotel parking lot en route to our bed.  A cop was coming in the opposite direction, and we made eye contact for a second while we passed each other.  I didn’t think too much of it, but Antonio was quick to inform me that he had "pulled a "U"-y" and was following close.  I still wasn’t that worried; i was trying to remember the directions that the girls gave us on the phone.
There was  quite a few people out and about, but it was a Saturday night.  I was going pretty slow, though, because of the foot traffic and because i had no idea where we were going.  I finally saw the turn, made my left, missed a parking spot, and began to make my way back around the block.  Antonio, meanwhile, chose this time to mention that Mr. Policeman was still following.  I made a full circle when Antonio said, "There went his lights."  I pulled over to the side, but my first thought was that i wasn’t on a one-way street like i thought i was and was getting busted for being on the incorrect side.  I was looking in my mirror, so i missed the car that came skidding to a halt in front of us, blocking our escape (like a loaded U-Haul was really going to gun it).
Anyway, i sat for a minute waiting for the inevitable "Liscence and registration" order, but i was instead treated to a "Hands on the dashboard!" yell.

uh-oh.

I was then ordered out of the car and patted down, then sent to stand near the back of the truck, where i noticed (not one, but . . . ) two cops with guns drawn and pointed at us.  Just then, Anida comes running down the sidewalk from where they were standing, yelling, "We’re the wives! What’s going on?"  We were informed that the truck was reported stolen and they had to check things out.  By this time, Antonio had been pulled out of the car as well, our liscenses (the girls, too) were in the possession of the cops, and i had counted 5 cop cars (as well as a Sheriff) that had bottled us in (again, maybe they had a lot of runaway U-Hauls).  As soon as i heard that the hubub was regarding a stolen truck, i calmed down, since i knew it had to have been a misunderstanding. At that point, i still thought it was a little funny that we were hauled out at gunpoint, so i first asked the guy (who turned out to be the sheriff) to turn off my engine, since gas was $3 a gallon (he shrugged and did so).  I then asked the group that was standing guard around us if any of them were Nussbaums or Walkers (they weren’t).   Antonio was not nearly as gracious, uttering a few choice words as we sat there on the curb.   In the rain.  At 12:30am.  With mothers pulling their children away from us (since we simply had to be criminals.  I mean, Antonio’s not white!)
Fast-forward abotu 45 minutes, in which time the cops had informed us that it was a misunderstanding (REEEEEAAAALLY?) and that we would be free to go in a few minutes, we were allowed to leave.  They called five hotels for us, but gave up and shrugged their shoulders.  We told them that we had experienced quite enough of the town of Cheyenne’s hospitality, and we would much rather keep driving, anyway.  Some time later, we made it, tired and quite grumpy, to Laramie.

So, with all due respect to my Wyoming relatives, you can keep your state to your ownselves, because i don’t think we’ll be heading back there any time soon.

Moving and Driving and Dallas

July 26, 2006

I didn’t get a chance to fully narrate our trip, so i thought i’d mention the highlights.
The truck-loading party was not well attended (such events never are), but we managed to get nearly everything.  We did have to get four people to close the back door, though.  Two to pull the door down while two pushed the couch in far enough).  We spent the night with Wes and Diana, with Jen and Ruth making appearances as well.
We left Raleigh Monday, July 3rd.  We were making pretty good time, and we didn’t have any problems with either of the vehicles.  Sally was riding in the Vibe with Brenda, while i was on my lonesome in the truck.  It’s wasn’t so, bad, though.  I had my RoadTrip to keep me warm.  Photo_070406_004

Anyway, we made it to Jackson, Missippi, without incident.  The truck was slurping gas (as we feared), but otherwise, it was running fine.   The only thing that was really bothersome was Sally.  She doesn’t travel well (pants and shakes), so we had her on some doggie tranquilizors.  The first two days, she fought them, so she spent the time blinking like a kid that was falling asleep in his chair.
The next morning, we were trucking along.  Sally was given a larger piece of downers travel pill, and the miles were falling behind.  Then, the Vibe picked up a nail.  ick (and flashbacks to the Atlanta trip)!  Luckily, it happened about 1/2 miles from a truck stop that was luckily open.  A quick patch-job later, and we were on our way.  We made it to Dallas at 4pm or so on July 4th — just in time for a good, Texas rainstorm.  That would be one thing that we did miss from the area, but we were caught outside and we were soak-ed.  Brenda’s old boss Rex had invited us over to spend the 4th grilling out and lighting fireworks.  Plus, he invited our dear old friend Karrie Porto to join the festivities.  We had a great time swapping stories and memories, and he even bought one of Bren’s paintings! (Which was exciting for the bonus reason of us needing to open the back of the truck; we did manage to do that without anyone being hit in the head with falling belongings.  Still fun, though.)
Sally got re-introduced to her old pal, Ceili (the Lofland’s Weimeriner), and Rex also bought her a party hat.

I think she only endured it because of the drugs, but it was still funny.

Rex bought the girls a big box of fireworks, so they had fun lighting those off.  I’m not really one for that stuff, so i mostly hung out with the dogs (who were under the impression that we were being attacked.  Brave souls that they were, they were cowering in the corner).  I was proved right when an errant ash damaged the finish on Rex’s new Acrua (oops).

Anyway, we said our goodbyes and headed to Wylie to spend a couple days with The Larsons.  We had a great (and very late) time catching up with them, before we finally zonked.  The next morning was breakfast at one of our favorite haunts, Cafe Brazil, with The Marlows (migas! all you can drink coffee!).  It was great to reconnect with them as well, and we eventually dragged our full bellies over to Wild About Harry’s
for some frozen custard.
After that, it was off to Wal-Mart (bad, bad hippie Ken) for some new tires on the Vibe and we took a quick wander across the street to Starbucks, where we were meeting our friends Amy and Lonnie.  We had a great visit with them (which spilled out to a late lunch at Pei Wei).  After that, i decided to take the car back to the Larsons while Brenda went with Amy to their place (Lonnie went to work).  I went back to Wylie to get ready for the time (and mind) warp that would be the visit back to Hillcrest Church.
It went better than expected, and actually turned out to be quite a theraputic experience.  Old friendships were rekindled, a tour was given (i hadn’t actually seen the new sanctuary), and i even saw a couple old students (that were depressingly all grown-up).
The next day was a bit more relaxed.  We hung out with the Larson clan, took in a movie with the kids (Cars - it sucked), and prepared for dinner at Anamia’s in Southlake.  We took a drive trek west, where we were introduced to the growing-like-a-weed Southlake/Grapevine area.  We got to the area a bit early, so we spent some time in the Southlake Town Centre, which is basically a big, outdoor mall.  We were walking past a new Taco Diner when one of the hostesses invited us to come in.  She informed us that Taco Diner was having their friends and family dinner before their grand opening, and would we like to come in for free appetizers and margaritas?  (twist my arm)
We called Necole and Chris, who were already there as well and informed them of the deal.  They were, of course, happy to partake as well.  We had our fill there and then headed to Anamia’s for the Party of the Century.  After a nightcap of ice cream, we made our way back to the Larsons for our final night in Wylie.
Friday, we journeyed (and not in a post-modern way; it was SIXTY MILES) to Justin to take advantage of the hospitality of the Duartes.  We had lunch with some folks at La Maddie’s, partied at the Pellets (including a bit of Halo2), before heading back to Antonio and Anida’s spread to get ready to drive on.

Vancouver

July 13, 2006

Yesterday, Brenda and I packed up Antonio and Anida and headed north to see our parents.  It was a fun trip, since Antonio has never been outside of the country.  We made it through the border fairly easily, actually, except for the cavity search.

just kidding.

Anida was on a quest for Cherry Blasters, which is a canadian sour gummy thing, so we went to Costco before we stopped at Mom and Dads.  6 boxes later, she had a very big smile.  We snagged some Nibs and some sour coke bottles, and then cruised over to the parentals.  Dad grilled about 17 chickens (since Tim and Rachel were coming too), and Mom made some grubbin’ potato salad and homemade raspberry vinegarette (for a spinich and mango salad).  Good munchies!

Today, we’re taking Antonio and Anida around Vancouver.  I think the plan involves sushi on Granville St, probably a quick spin through Stanley Park, and the John Fluevog store.  Wurd!

Right now, i’m drinking a hot cup of coffee with the door to the patio wide open and the fresh smell of pine breezing through my living room.

In Seattle.

Just so you know.

ps : trip updates are coming soon, and we have some stories to tell.  There will be a tale of my second interaction with the pigs cops in less than a week, but this one will include firearms . . . stay tuned.

Dallas (Day One)

July 5, 2006

So far, we’re having a great time in Dallas, although we do feel like we’re in a bit of a time warp.  This morning, we had a great brunch with the Marlow’s at one of our favorite old haunts, Cafe Brazil.  It was a great time with them reconnecting, and it was great seeing the girls as well.  After that, we had a Concrete from Wild About Harry’s — great, great frozen custard mixed with beaucoup Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.
After that, we hooked up with Amy and Lonnie Robbins for some Starbucks (and Brends’s old store, actually).  Amy is a very old school friend of Brenda, and I used to work with Lonnie at Roy’s.  Now, as a random thing, Lonnie and I both are selling insurance for a couple of the same companies.
Now, I’m back at the Larson’s smelling some delicious fajita’s, before we get ready to head of to Hillcrest for church tonight (an event that promises to be an even more mind-bending headtrip into the past.  I can’t wait) .

July 5, 2006

We made it to Dallas.  Boy, do i NOT miss the heat here.  I only have time for a speedy update, so . . . we saw Karrie Porto and the Loflands (the family that Brenda used to work for) last night, we’re staying with Chris, Kelly, and the clan for the next couple days, and we’re off to see the Marlow’s at Cafe Brazil! yum yum yum.

More updates soon - i promise.

All Packed Up

July 2, 2006

Whew!  I am tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiired!

Our bags are packed, and we’re ready to go.  The truck is loaded, the house is bare (and clean), and right now we’re hanging out at Wes and Diana’s for the night.  We’ll be driving away bright and early in the AM.  Our goal is to make it at least to Jackson, Mississippi, but we may go a bit further.

It was great to get everything accomplished; thanks to everyone that come out and helped.  A HUGE THANK YOU to my friends Louis and Kim; we would NEVER EVER got everything loaded without your help!

Don’t worry; i’ll let you guys know soon what happened yesterday.

The End of An Era

June 27, 2006

After three years and about 45,000 miles, i had to say good-bye to my faithful Mazda 626.  It served me well during our time here, from hauling a huge load of Sacred stuff every week to carting me all over hither and yon as i worked at my insurance gig.  In it’s lifetime with me, i’ve replaced the clutch, brakes, C/V joints, and do some exhaust work on it.  Of course, the A/C never worked, so i’ve probably sweated 40 pounds off of me during each summer (luckily, i was able to eat my way back to fat).  But, it was more reliable than even my Jetta was–always turning over, no matter how long it sat idle.

Thanks to the miracle of Craigslist, i had 4 e-mails about it withing 8 hours of posting it.  Three test-drives later, and i sold it (for my FULL asking price).  I transferred the title this AM, so i’m now amoung the ranks of the carless once again.
