The Music Slut reported that The Toadies are the latest group to realize they could make some money doing what they used to love. Oh, how I love Todd Lewis and Co.
Back To The Music
November 10, 2007For a “music blog”, i certainly haven’t been talking about music for a while. Here’s a quick rundown of a few things I’ve been listening to lately:
Band of Horses - Cease To Begin
I had very high hopes for this one. Everything All The Time made my Best of 2006 list, so I was anxious to see how the move to South Carolina was going to pan out for the former NW’ers. It’s a good, solid release. It’s not my favorite, and I don’t think it’s going to make this year’s list, but it’s probably still a 4 out of 5. Ben’s vocals are still the strongest, most unique aspect of the band. The arrangements are stronger this time out, but the overall feel is a bit more mainstream.
A.C. Newman - The Slow Wonder
TSW is the debut of I Radio Heaven fave The New Pornographer’s frontman A.C. (Carl) Newman. It’s a 2004 release, and I’ve been looking for it for a while (thanks, eMusic). So far, I love it. It’s basically TNP-lite, though it’s a better solo release than Broken Social Scene Presents . . . Kevin Drew Spirit If. Just like The New Pornographers, it’s indie-pop wonder at it’s best; for fans of Spoon, etc.
Tunng - Good Arrows
I picked this one up on my foray to Ballard last Monday, so i’ve only had time for a couple of listens. The word “folktronica” has been tossed around in describing this band, but the first thing I thought of was 2006’s masterpiece The Dust of Retreat from Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s. It’s dreamy and ethereal, with grand but never pretentious instrumentation. Very good, and very worth checking out.
The Verve Release Track Listing
October 27, 2007I am SOOOO excited.
After reuniting earlier this year The Verve have been creating new material. Now bassist Simon Jones has released the name of some of those tracks on his blog. Some of the new song names include “Sit and Wonder”, “Judas”, “Appalachian Springs”, “Mona Lisa” and “Rather Be”
Jones also mentioned that possible songs for upcoming dates may include “Make It Till Monday”, “Virtual World”,”She’s A Superstar”, “Gravity Grave”,”This Is Music”, “A New Decade”, “On Your Own”, “History”, “Stormy Clouds”, “Life’s An Ocean”, “A Northern Soul”, “All In The Mind!”, “B.S.S” (Bitter Sweat Symphony), “Drugs Don’t Work”, “Sonnet”, “Lucky Man”, “Come On”, “Weeping Willow”, “Rolling People”, “Velvet Morning”, “Space And Time”, “Man Called Sun”, “Starsail” and some new tracks.
In addition to the previously mentioned new songs, The Verve has other new tracks they intend to record early next year.

The Bravery - “Time Won’t Let Me Go”
March 23, 2007The Bravery have released their new single from their upcoming May release The Sun and The Moon, "Time Won’t Let Me Go."
I like it.
Perhaps inspired by their ludicrous catfight with The Killers, they’ve moved away from the Morrisey-influenced, faux-dance-rock beat of their self-titled debut and settled on a more straight-forward, indie rock sound. Sam Endicott’s vocals are still a bit "love it or hate it," but it’s overall a good move for the NYC-based outfit.

TV On The Radio (with Grizzly Bear)
October 18, 2006Brooklyn band TV On The Radio has been riding an ever-increasing wave of support for quite some time now. They have moved from blogger darlings to favorite-sons-of-David Bowie to indie hipster superstars over the past three or four years. Along the way, they have developed a reputation of having one of the strongest live shows in the business. I, like any self-respecting indie snob, was dying to catch one of their famed concerts, and I was awarded handsomely for my patience as they came with none other than the anti-folk/lo-fi kings Grizzly Bear.
The show took place at Seattle’s The Showbox, an amazing venue with a rich, vintage maroon and gold decor and a great layout. The stage sits in the middle of a floor that is spread wide rather than deep, making even the back row relatively close to the band. Two(!) bars sit on the back two corners, and they have cocktail tables and bleachers, giving every seat a great view. We managed to slide our way to the right end of the stage, and we were only about ten feet back from the action.
